Obituary of LTC William H. Lentz

LTC William H. Lentz Jr age 95 of Camp Hill died on January 9, 2016 at Sunrise surrounded by his loving family. Born 23 June 1920 in Tarentum PA. Colonel Lentz was a graduate of St. Joseph High School, Natrona Heights Pa., and Duquesne University B.A. and M.Ed., where he later served as a counselor and Director of the Veterans Counseling Center. He was an Artillery Officer during World War II, serving as a forward Observer and Air Observer, and was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster after flying 76 Combat Missions. Colonel Lentz was a graduate of the Artillery Communications School, and the Command and General Staff School. Later, as reservist, he was a C. & G.S. Instructor at the Harrisburg Reserve Center. In 1961 his reserve unit, the 5th. Battalion of the 43rd Artillery, an anti-aircraft unit was called to active duty as a 155mm Howitzer Battalion and ordered to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for Berlin Crisis. In less than six months of intensive training the unit was converted to real Artillery and made the highest score that will ever made on the Fourth Army Artillery test, 100 percent in both gunnery and survey. After receiving his Master Degree at Duquesne in 1947, Bill became the Guidance Director, and later an administrator in the now Highlands School District. In 1956 Bill was recruited by Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation as a Human Relations Instructor and later became Training Director at their Dunkirk N.Y. plant. In 1957 he returned to education hoping to apply his experience in human relations to public schools. In 1967 he became a member of a research team to develop a model computer controlled comprehensive educational plan for medical technicians for the Pittsburgh School District. He then headed a training program for the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians. He returned to public education as coordinator of Training for the Executive Academy of the Pennsylvania Department of Education until his retirement in 1982. Colonel Lentz was the son of the late William Lentz Sr. and Frances McDonough Lentz, and brother of the late Mark Lentz of Springdale, PA. His wife of 57 years, Kathleen (Kay) Friel Lentz, died in 2000.Bill was a lifetime tennis player. He was a multiple State Game Winner. In 2011, won the National Senior Games in Doubles. He is survived by his sons William H. III and wife Donna of Pittsburgh, Robert C. and wife Sandra of Boiling Springs, daughter Kathleen of Newville, and daughter in-law Jackie of Spartansburg, S.C., Six grandchildren, Maria, William IV, Kristel, Melissa, Robert Jr., Mark. Great Grandchildren, Christian, Juliet, Joey, Tyler, Lilla, Vincenzo, Gino, Julianne-Kay, and Ryan. Nephews, Colonel Michael Lentz U.S Marines Ret. and Colonel Daniel Lentz U.S Air Force Ret., James Lentz and niece Dorie Lentz Schleiden. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 11:00 A.M at St. Patrick's Church in Carlisle. A Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 in the church. Burial with Full Military Honors will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. The Dailey Funeral Home Is Honored To Serve the Lentz Family.
