Obituary of Eugene A. Johnson

Eugene A. Johnson Born in Harrisburg, Pa. on January 14, 1930 Eugene " Poppa" Johnson died on April 13, 2015 at Emeritus at Loyalton while in hospice care. Raised in Harrisburg at 57 N. 10th Street Eugene attended John Harris High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force serving as a fireman from 1950-1954. He was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington. It was there in Spokane while on leave where he met the love of his life- Phyllis Hale - a sales clerk at a downtown book store. After his discharge they married and moved to Harrisburg. Eugene was a dedicated employee of the United States Postal Service. He was an hardworking mail handler for 30 years.He received many letters of accommodation for his devoted service. After retiring Eugene and Phyllis moved to Penbrook. Proclaimed by many as the unofficial mayor of Penbrook.Eugene was the 'watchdog at the borough's monthly meetings; keeping the council members apprised of the need to follow the Sunshine Laws. Also many residents of the borough fondly remember his daily walks through town and his opinions on national and local politics.Eugene was proud of his fifty plus years as a member of the Freemasons. Sadly Eugene lost his wife Phyllis of fifty-nine years of marriage. She died last March and soon he became infirmed. His friend Dave Wachtman wishes to thank those who visited "Poppa" while sick. Much gratitude to all the workers of Homeland Hospice, their professionalism and tender care towards Eugene made for a comfortable six weeks of life. Also the staff and aides of Emeritus at Loyalton where "Poppa: called home this last year, an heart-felt thanks for your compassion. A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 16,2015 at 11:00 AM at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville,Pa.
